We’ve outlined the basic methods below. They are quite easy, which is why we won’t go into many details about each: 1. Using the Basic Rectangle and Elliptical selection tools, you can select the area(s) you want to remove. This can be done by dragging your mouse pointer over the area you want to delete, and by clicking on “Delete” on your keyboard. Use the Lasso Selection Option for a selection that has an irregular shape, and press “Delete” to remove the selected area of the image and make it transparent. You can use the ‘Instant Alpha’ tool. Drag your mouse pointer to select the image exposure you want to delete.
Step Use the 'Magic Wand' or 'Lasso' tool--it may also be called the 'Selection' tool--to select the area you want to be transparent. Select 'Delete' or 'Clear' from the 'Edit' menu to erase the area selected, making sure the layer you created in the previous step is the active layer. Step Erase any stray bits you may have missed using the 'Eraser' tool, making sure the image layer is still selected. Step Check to make sure you can see the 'background' through the part you erased.
The space will turn red while you’re dragging, and then become a standard selection box when you let go of the mouse or trackpad. You’ll then be asked if you want to convert the image to PNG, if it isn’t one already. Then, hit the Delete button on your keyboard to get rid of that selected section. Do the same for the rest of the whitespace you want to delete. When you’re finished, save your effort, either as the PNG you saved it as already, or as a GIF file, the other transparency supporting format.

Actions Technical Details The GIF file format was invented by Compuserve for their online service, but they made the specifications publicly available. GIFs are able to hold multiple bitmaps of up to 256 colors each, using LZW (Lempel Zev Welch - a simple form of file compression that removes inefficiencies in the data storage without losing data or distorting the image) compressed raster data to minimize file sizes. The idea is to lessen the amount of colours in a GIF image to the minimum number necessary and to therefore remove stray colors that are not required to represent the image. A GIF graphic is unable to have more than 256 colors but it can have fewer colors, down to the minimum of two (black and white).
